More Fatal Accidents Due to an Increased Traffic and More Distracted Drivers

Increase in Number of Cars on Road and More Distracted Drivers Leads to More Traffic-Related Fatalities

CHICAGO, IL- Soukvalley.com reports that the United States is one of just five out of 29 countries studied that has seen an increase in traffic-related fatalities in recent years. The study, which was conducted by the International Transport Forum, looked at traffic-death trends between 2010 and 2016.

Traffic deaths in the United States rose by13.5%, which was the greatest increase out of all countries studied. The second-highest increase was in Argentina, with 9% more fatalities, followed by Chile where traffic-fatalities rose by 5%.

The study also showed that America had the largest increase in pedestrian deaths, with a 39.2% increase and a 34.8% increase in cyclist deaths. Other countries studies saw huge drops, including Norway, where pedestrian deaths declined by 37.5% while deaths were rising in the U.S.

According to the study, distracted driving and an increase in traffic seem to be the causes of the U.S. traffic-death increases. Distracted driving seems to be more common and a bigger problem in America than in other parts of the world. The improving economy has led to more cars being on the road in the U.S. creating more opportunities for accidents.

Not only does the U.S. have the greatest increase in deaths, butAmericans are also more likely to die on the road thanpeople in other countries. The per capita death rate in the U.S. is more than twice as high as the U.K., Japan, Germany, Spain, Israel, and Australia. Out of every 100,000 people in America, 11.6 will die in car crashes compared to only 2 to 5 out of every 100,000 in these other countries.

Cities across the U.S., including Chicago, have started to adopt Vision Zero, a program started in Sweden, which aims to reduce traffic-related fatalities.
