Motorcycles offer riders fewer protections than other vehicles. In addition to lacking many of the safety features that exist in cars, motorcycles are more likely to be involved in crashes because they are not as visible to drivers as are other vehicles. Many drivers overlook motorcycles because they are small and because the driversare focused on looking for cars. Drivers making left turns often fail to notice motorcycles. Thisis an extremely common, if not the most common type of motorcycle accident.

In 2015, motorcycle fatalities rose by 24% over 2014. That same year, motorcycle fatalities increased on a national level. Part of the reason for the increased deaths could have been improved weather and lower fuel prices, both of which likely led to more motorcycles being on the roadways. However, one study indicated that the number of motorcycle fatalities could be greatly reduced if states implemented mandatory helmet laws for all motorcyclists. Illinois is one of only three states that currently have no helmet laws.
