Motorcyclist Killed in Crash with Jeep in Lake County, Illinois

LAKE COUNTY, IL- Patch.com reports that a crash between a motorcycle and a Jeep in Lake County on Wednesday caused one fatality. The accident took place on July 11, 2018 at about 2:15 p.m. at the intersection of Kilbourne Road and Route 173.

The 2008 Jeep Compass was driven by a 69-year-old woman from Gurnee. The driver attempted to make a left turn ontoRoute 173 and drove into the path of the victim’s motorcycle, which was traveling south on Kilbourne Road. The motorcyclist was thrown from his 1999 Yamaha motorcycle.

The victim was transportedto St. Catherine’s Medical Center where he was declared dead. The woman driving the Jeep did not suffer any injuries in the collision.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash.

Motorcyclists are more vulnerable than vehicle occupants on the road. Not only do they lack many of the safety features and protections available in larger vehicles, but they are also smaller and less visiblethan cars on the road. Many drivers do not think to look out for motorcycles and therefore might overlook them, creating devastating accidents in the process.

In 2015, the United States saw a 10% increase inmotorcycle-related fatalities over the previous year. More than 5,000 motorcyclists died on US roadways in 2015 marking the first time since 2008 that the motorcycle death toll surpassed 5,000. Illinois experienced a steeper spike in motorcycle deaths than did other states with an increase of 24% over 2014.

While part of the increase in deaths could be the result of more motorcycles on the road because better weather conditions and lower gas prices, some research indicates the fatalities could be reducedif more states had universal helmet laws. Illinois, in particular, has nohelmet law in place.
