ROCK ISLAND COUNTY, Illinois — A chain reaction accident on the I-280 bridge in a construction zone caused a massive traffic jam during the morning commute on Thursday, November 15, 2018, according to WQAD.com. Law enforcement officers investigating the incident said that no one sustained any injuries in the accident. However, officials say that two out of the three drivers received citations for their actions in causing the pileup.
Illinois State Police investigated the accident. Troopers said that the driver of a dump trunk entered the construction zone on the I-280 bridge in Rock Island County westbound and slowed down. The driver of the tractor-trailer truck following the dump truck failed to slow in time and smashed into the dump truck.A third truck plowed into the back of the semi-truck.
Illinois State Police troopers cited both drivers who crashed into the rear of the vehicle in front of them for failing to reduce speed. The initial media report suggested that all three drivers received traffic citations from the investigating troopers for failing to reduce speed.
Traffic attempting to use the I-280 bridge to cross over the Mississippi River was slow before the accident because crews closed one lane to create a construction zone. Traffic became more congested as volume from the morning commute increased. The accident made things worse. The State Police closed the I-280 westbound lanes and created a detour onto Illinois Highway 92. The State Police advised commuters to take the Centennial Freeway to Rock Island, cross the Centennial Bridge, and then continue westerly on River Drive to finally reconnect with I-280 West in the area of Illinois Highway 61.
Traffic was slowing eastbound as well. Construction crews closed one lane on the I-280 bridge as construction continues. The accident on the opposite side of the Interstate caused curiosity delays as well eastbound.
