One Dead in Construction Accident at Menard Correctional Center

CHESTER, IL- Kfvs.com reports that a man was killed while working as a contractor on the outside of the Menard Correctional Center in Chester, IL. The construction accident occurred on August 2, 2018. There are no other reported injuries in connection to the incident.

The victim of the accident was identified as Ronald Pointer, 55, of Granite City. Investigators have not disclosed the cause or nature of the accident.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is conducting an investigation into the deadly incident.

Pointer had 30 years of experience working as a contractor. He was currently working for Merlin Stelzer Services. The company released a statement saying that theywere working alongside OSHA to determine what caused the accident.

When a person is killed on the job,the employer has eight hours to report the incident to OSHA. Every workplacefatality at covered workplaces is investigated by OSHA. The investigations can take up to six months.Once OSHA has completed an investigation, they can issue any warranted citations.

The construction industry accounts for a large number ofwork-related fatalities. In 2016, 21.2 percent of work-relateddeaths in privateindustry occurred within the construction industry. Across the United States, 4,693 work-related fatalities were reported, and991 of those occurred in construction. Many of those deathsoccurred in the four areas of construction that OSHA has identified as the deadliest, or the “Fatal Four.”

If the construction industry could eliminate deaths from falls, workers being struck by objects, electrocutions and “caught-in/between” accidents, OSHA estimates that about 631 American lives would be saved annually.
