Illinois has a universal seatbelt law that makes it illegal for any vehicle occupants to drive without their seatbelts. Regardless of the fines that a person might be required to pay for failing to buckle up, wearing a seatbelt is just the responsible thing to do. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 14,668 people survived car accidents because they used their seatbelts in 2016. The national average for seatbelt use is now an impressive 90.1 percent. However, if seatbelts were used by all vehicle occupants, then in 2016 alone, another 2,456 people’s lives could have been saved. Of the 37,461 people killed in automobile crashes in 2016, 48 percent did not use a seatbelt. Using a seatbelt while riding in the front of a passenger vehicle reduces a person’s risk of death by 45 percent.
