Pedestrian Dies in Des Plaines on Touhy Avenue in Cook County, Illinois

COOK COUNTY, IL- The dailyherald.com writes that a woman was killed in a pedestrian accident on Saturday, December 15, 2018, at about 5 in the morning. The victim, 55-year-old Elaine J. Marshall, was hit in the westbound lanes of Touhy Avenue. The victim was declared dead a little over an hour later.*

The cause of the incident is still undetermined.

Pedestrian crashes kill thousands of people in the United States every year. In the past two years, nearly 6,000 people died per year. The numbers represent the highest number of fatal pedestrian crashes in 25-years. These are many causes for the rising pedestrian fatalities. More vehicles on the road as a result of a strong economy and low gas prices make pedestrian crashes more likely.Larger vehicles mean that when people are struck, they are more likely to be killed. SUV sales are outpacing cars, and the larger vehicles tend to hit people higher on their bodies and cause more severe injuries and more deaths. Cell phones are a distraction for drivers, but for pedestrians as well. And there is some evidence that marijuana use could be adding to the increase as well because higher numbers of pedestrian deaths have been seen in states that have recently legalized recreational marijuana use.

It is possible to reduce the number of people killed in pedestrian accidents. Safer street designs are one way to increase safety. Reduced speed limits also greatly reduce the risk of fatal incidents by making it more likely that drivers can avoid striking a person and making the resulting accident less severe.

Newer vehicle technologies that can detect pedestrians may be the next major tool that can be used to cut down on the number of fatal pedestrian incidents.
