PEORIA COUNTY, IL- The pontiacdailyleader.com reports that a man was struck by a pickup truck that was hauling farming equipment on Saturday, July 28, 2018,just after 9 p.m. The accident took place near Cornell.
The victim was 41-year-old Michael Garcia, of Cornell. Responders transported Garcia to OSF Healthcare Saint Francis Medical Center. Reports referred to Garcia’s condition as “grave.” The victim was pronounced dead later on the night of the accident.
Early investigations indicate that Garcia was walking east along the westbound shoulder of Illinois 23.A pickup truck that was pulling farm equipment was driving west, andat the intersection of 111 East Road, a vehicle turned in front of the pickup truck. The driver of the pickup went around the other vehicle and then returned to his lane. However, the maneuver caused the farm equipment, a conditioner often referred to as a “Haybine,” stayed in the shoulder and hit Garcia. Garcia sustained severe head trauma and multiple blunt force injuries.
Traffic fatalities in Illinois, which include deaths of vehicle occupants, pedestrians, cyclists, andmotorcyclists, have been on the rise in recent years. One factor that is likely contributing to therising death toll is the increase of speed limits on roadways. When a person is struck by a vehicle,the speed at which the vehicle is traveling has a major impact on the likelihood that theperson struck will survive the crash. When a vehicle is traveling under25 miles per hour, the chances of the victim living are much greater. Lowing the speed limit would likely help to decrease the number of traffic deaths in the state.
