ROUND LAKE BEACH, IL- The chicagotribune.com reports that the Lake County Coroner has identified the man who was killed on Monday when he was hit by a vehicle while attempting to cross Route 83 while walking his bike and carrying groceries.
The victim was Francisco Suarez Lopez, 67. When police were called to the scene of the crash, they found Suarez Lopez on the road unresponsive. The victim was taken to the Advocate Condell Medical Center where he was declared dead.
The initial reports indicate that Suarez Lopez was attempting to cross Route 83 a little before 7 p.m. He was walking from the west side to the east.
The victim was hit by a 2008 Ford Taurus operated by a 26-year-old woman. The driver who struck Suarez Lopez was heading south on Route 83.
After the victim was hit debris from the accident entered the northbound traffic lanes where itwas hit by an Infinity operated by a 27-year-old woman. The driver of the Infinity stopped.
On Tuesday, police stated that it does not appear that the victim was hit more than once.
In Illinois, there were 4,913 pedestrian crashes in 2016. Out of those collisions, 150 were fatal, and 4,648 caused injuries. The largest number of pedestrian crashes, 3,792, took place on city streets and roads. Urban locations tend to have far more pedestrian accidents than rural areas. There were 123 pedestrian deaths in urban parts of Illinois in 2016 as compared to just 27 in rural parts of the state.
Chicago has joined other major cities in implementing a Vision Zero Program which is intended to make the roads safer for everyone, including pedestrians.
