CHICAGO, Ill. — Two children suffered critical, life-threatening injuries, and five other children in separate cars also were hurt in a wreck on the Dan Ryan Expressway. The Chicago Sun-Times reported that the crash happened on Monday, April 1, 2019, but did not give a time. Illinois State Police investigated the accident and issued traffic tickets for numerous motor vehicle infractions. Among the various violations, neither driver was operating an insured vehicle at the time of the crash. There was no information about criminal charges or arrests on Monday.
Illinois State Police troopers reported that a 29-year-old woman driving her 2001 white Chrysler on I-94 north in the express lane slammed into the back of a 2010 Ford vehicle operated by a 27-year-old woman. The Ford swerved to the right and careened into the front of the driver’s side of a 2018 Hyundai.
Two children in the Ford were critically injured in the crash. State police said that a 4-month-old infant was not secured in a child seat while riding in the Ford as well as a 4-year-old toddler both sustained critical injuries. There were two other children in the Ford as well. A 2-year-old and a 6-year-old were both in the car as well. Medics transported those children to the hospital and were listed in stable condition.
Three children were riding in the 2001 Chrysler. All three, whose ages were not given, went to area hospitals. All three children were listed in stable condition.
Illinois State Police issued several citations for motor vehicle infractions. State police cited the driver of the Chrysler for leaving the scene of a crash, following too closely, driving uninsured, and not reducing speed. Meanwhile, State Police cited the operator of the Ford for possession of alcohol, driving uninsured, and four counts of not securing a child properly.
No additional information was available concerning the two children listed in critical condition.
