Hit-and-run crashes take place frequently and have been occurring more often in the United States. The motivation for drivers to flee is typically to avoid facing the legal consequences of their actions. In many of these crashes, alcohol plays a factor. When a driver strikes a person, they will feel a mix of powerful “emotions including fear, shame, andguilt.” The urge to run from the scene can be strong, and it can be even worse when drivers are under the influence of alcohol, which lowers a person’s ability to make rational decisions.

As hit-and-run crashes have become more prevalent in the country, states and cities have taken actions to deter drivers from leaving the site of a crash. In many places, the legal penalties for fleeing the scene of a crash have been increased.
