Dashboard Cam Video Released by Decatur Police Show Moment Cop Car T-Bones Pickup Truck

CHICAGO, IL- Chicago.cbslocal.com reports that the Decatur Police have released a dashboard video showing the moment when a police squad car T-boned a pickup truck. The police are using the video to remind drivers of the importance of staying alert behind the wheel.

The crash occurred on July 9, 2018 at the intersection of 22ndStreet and Route 36. Two officers were in the police vehicle at the time of the crash. Both reported being a “bit sore,” but said they will be returning to work soon.

The video shows that the pickup truck ran through a red light just before being struck by the officer’s car. The driver of the pickup did not sustain anyserious injuries.

When the department uploaded the video to Facebook, it started conversations about whether something could have been done to avoid the accident.

Drivers run through red lights with alarming frequency. Hundreds of people are killed every year inaccidents involving a driver going through a red traffic light, and additional tens of thousands of people are injured.

One study conducted in Fairfax, Virginia indicated that motorists run red lights at a rate on once every 20 minutes. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the drivers most likely to run red lights are younger, male, and to have “have prior crashes or alcohol-impaired driving convictions.” Many of these drivers are also speeding, under the influence of alcohol, or driving without a valid driver’s license at the time of the crash.The IIHS states that red light cameras have been shown to reduce the number of violations.
