Car accidents occur with great frequency across the United States. In Illinois, more than one thousand people were killed in traffic accidents in 2016. In 2017, the number of vehicle-related deaths in Illinois was over 1,000 again with 1,080 reported roadway fatalities.

One major cause of traffic accidents is distracted driving. Distracted driving includes behaviors such as eating while driving and looking at the radio, but increasingly in recent years,it has meant texting and driving or otherwise using a smartphone while behind the wheel. According to a representative from the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), texting and driving is still a major problem on the roadways, even though it is illegal. It can be difficult for police to enforce these laws or to detect the violations.

One major cause of vehicle collisions in Illinois in recent years is speeding. Between 2014 and 2015 speed related accidents increased by about 5.5%. Fatal accidents involving speeding increased by 8.4 percent. During the same time period, accidents involving alcohol dropped.

While Illinois has taken steps to reduce the number of car accidents that occur each year in the state, car accidents are still on the rise. Between 2011 and 2015 car accidents increased from 281,788 to 313,216 while deadly crashes went from 835 to 914.
