The majorityof rollover accidents occur when a driver loses control of their vehicle, andit starts to “slide sideways.” Often an object such as a guardrail or bump in the road will then trip the vehicle, causing it to roll. Other times, vehicle rollover because a driver attempts to take a curve at too high of speedor makes too sharp of a turn. In these cases, the vehicle does not have to trip on anything because the friction between the road and the tires is enough to cause the vehicle to flip. While vehicles sometimes flip after being hit by another vehicle, about 75% of all rollover-related fatalities occur in single-vehicle crashes.

It is possible for any type ofvehicle to flip, but some types of vehicles are more likely to roll over. SUVs and pickup trucks are far more likely to be involved in rollovercrashes than cars. Thishas to do with vehicle design and the center of gravity. SUVs and a pickuptruck are more top heavy than cars because they are higher off of the ground and taller. The chances of an SUV or pickup truck rolling can increase even more if these vehicles are carrying many passengers or heavy cargo.
