DECATUR, IL – writes that a serious crash took place on Interstate 72 last weekend on Saturday, November 24, 2018. The man driving the vehicle, 27-year-old Paris Mathew Williams of Decatur died on Monday, November 26, at about 7:18 in the HSHS St. John’s Hospital from injuries that he suffered in the accident.

A passenger in the vehicle, 29-year-old Marshae Robinson of Decatur died from the injuries that she suffered in the crash. Another passenger, 22-year-old Shakeia Stewart, suffered injuriesin the crash and was taken to the hospital.

The collision involved just one vehicle, a white Chevrolet Malibu. The Malibu was traveling east on Interstate 72 when the driver lost control of the vehicle. The Malibu spun and then struck a tree off the right side of the road.

The crash is still under investigation.

Single-vehicle crashes kill about 20 percent of all crash victims in the United States. Driver behavior is the most likely cause for these crashes, though there are times when the weathercan cause roads to be slick or lead to low visibility and increase the chances of a vehicle running off the road.

Most of these collisions involve speeding vehicles. About 90 percent of all run-off-the-road crashes involve a single vehicle veering off the road. Alcohol is another common factor and plays a role in more single-vehicle fatal accidents than it does in multiple vehicle crashes.

Distracted driving, which often involves a person looking at their phone while operating a vehicle, is another major cause of traffic accidents.

The most likely object to be struck by a vehicle that leaves the road is a tree.
