Seemingly Intentional Crash Kills One, Injures Another

CHICAGO– Chicago Police are leading a manhunt for the person who appeared to have intentionally run down several people standing on a sidewalk in the Englewood section of the city. ABC7Chicago.com reports that 52-year-old grandmother died and a 19-year-old man suffered severe injuries in the hit-and-run crash that seemed intentional according to witnesses.*

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office stated that the deceased grandmother name is Connie Mangrum. Ms. Mangrum along with 19-year-old Javonte Kirkland and several others congregated on the 5600-block of South Racine Avenue at 11:15 a.m. on Thursday, October 18, 2018, when a silver mini-van drove across the road onto the opposite sidewalk, went around a box truck parked along the curb, traveled down the sidewalk, and plowed over two of the people standing in the small group. The collision tossed victims’ defenseless bodies into the air and into the street.

Ms. Mangrum died later in the evening at the University of Chicago Medical Center. Mr. Kirkland suffered severe injuries but is expected to survive. He remains hospitalized at the University of Chicago Medical Center.

The carnage would have been worse but-for the quick reaction of a man who saw the mini-van coming. He ushered people out of the path of the vehicle while pulling his 3-year-old son to safety. The two people hit could not escape the path of the vehicle.

The silver mini-can kept going after colliding with the pedestrians. Police believe that the vehicle is a Dodge Caravan and has extensive front-end damage. Chicago PD has asked anyone with information about the incident to come forward. No one has been able to identify the person behind the wheel never mind a motive for committing such a heinous act.

People from the neighborhood who knew Ms. Mangum lamented her loss. They said she was a kind and caring woman who would not hesitate to help a person in need.
