Semi Driver Loses Control and Goes Off U.S. 35

Greene County, Ohio — A semi-truckdriver is lucky to have escaped a terrifying crash with only a sore back after he lost control over his rig and plunged off of U.S. 35 in close proximity to Xenia in Greene County. The Dayton Daily News reported that the accident took place around 9:30 a.m. on Friday, November 9, 2018. Crews worked diligently until noon to extricate the cab from the woods off of U.S. 35 and reopen the road to traffic.

The truck driver was on his way to pick up a load Friday in Decatur, Illinois when he lost control over his rig on U.S. 35 bypass headed to U.S. 35 west.  The driver told reporters that he tried to slow down to negotiate the curve in the road but could not maintain control of his rig. The truck driver said that his cab started swerving when he tried to slow down. He crashed into and then through the guardrail. The cabended up about 75 feet of off the road, down a steep embankment.

The cab driver told reporters that he was lucky to be alive. He stated that he was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and that he would have crashed through the windshield but for the use of his restraint.

The truck driver told reporters that this was his second accident but did not say how long he has been a commercial truck driver. The driver thanked passers-by who stopped to help him get out of his severely damaged cab and climb to safety.

Lack of experience driving in the area, coupled with excessive speed may have played a role in the crash. The driver said that this ill-fated trip was the second time he drove through the area. State troopers issued a citation to the driver for failing to control his vehicle.
