Semi-Truck Driver Charged for Causing Crash Involving Three Trucks in Salem, Illinois

SALEM, Ill. — Troopers assigned to the Illinois State Police responded to the scene of a crash on I-57 southbound involving three tractor-trailer trucks. The multi-vehicle accident occurred on Thursday, September 6, 2018, in an area located south of Salem according to FoxIllinois.com. State police officers conducted a brief investigation and determined one of the drivers was responsible for causing the pile-up.

State police responded to the emergency call for the crash at approximately 12:20 p.m. The responding troopers found the crash site near milepost 112.5 on I-57 southbound. Upon arriving at the scene of the crash, the responding troopers learned that a 2016 Volvo tractor trailer truck heading north on I-57 in the left-hand lane experienced mechanical problems when one of its front steer tries ruptured. The driver lost control over the big rig and rode into the median strip separating the northbound and southbound lanes of I-57 approximately four miles south of Salem.

At the same time the 2016 Volvo entered the median strip, two other semi-trucks were headed south on I-57. A 2014 Volvo tractor-trailer combo in the left-hand lane headed south passed a third 18-wheeler when the 2016 Volvo traversed the median and collided with both of the semi-trucks. The wreck ripped off axels four and five of the southbound trucks. Those vehicles came to rest on the right side of the southbound lanes of I-57. The 2016 Volvo stopped across the southbound lanes of I-57.

Emergency services technicians transported the driver of the 2016 Volvo and his passenger to a local hospital with injuries police described as non-threatening, although police did not indicate just how serious the injuries were.

The operator of the 2016 Volvo, 24-year-old Mohammed Hussein Mohsen, from Michigan, received a citation from state police for failing to maintain a safe speed to avoid a crash.
