BERKELEY, IL- Nbcchicago.com writes that a semi-trailer caught fire after driving into a tractor-trailer that was on the shoulder of Interstate 294.*
The crash took place at about 6:51in the evening close to Berkeley, Illinois. The truck driver was injured in the accident and was taken to Elmhurst Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
The crash shut down several lanes around mile marker 32.5 as emergency vehicles arrived on the scene. Traffic was diverted around the crash.
The charter bus was broken down and was empty when the accident took place.
When vehicles become disabled on a highway, the drivers often have no choice but to pull over to the shoulder and stop. This is a precarious place for people to wait because it is so close to traffic, and that traffic is traveling at high rates of speed. It is not uncommon for crashes to involve a vehicle striking a disabled vehicle on the side of the road. Sometimes vehicles hit the people from the disabled vehicle because those individuals choose to exit their vehicle. In many cases, the best course of actionfor someone in a disabled vehicle is to remain in that vehicle, remain in their seat with their seatbelt fastened and turn on their hazard lights until they can get professional roadside assistance.
Of course, it is also important for drivers to keep an eye out for disabled vehicles. Unfortunately, distracted drivers are all too common on the road, as are drunk drivers and drivers traveling too fast for road conditions. People should never count on other drivers to be alert and cautious when their safety is on the line.
