ALEXANDER COUNTY, Ill. — The passenger of a pickup truck died, and the driver of the pickup trucksuffered severe, life-threatening injuries, in a single-car crash in Alexander County on Wednesday, September 5, 2018. Neither driver nor passenger wore seatbelts according to the Southern Illinoisan. Troopers from the Illinois State Police who responded to the fatal crash did not indicate whether they would seek criminal charges against the driver for causing the death of his passenger.
Illinois State Police troopers assigned to the District 22 regional office investigatedthe crash. The troopersstated in a press release that a man from Missouri named Robert Lewis Thompson, who is 56-years-of-age, drove a 2000 Toyota pickup truck on Levee Road in Alexander County. Around 4:30 p.m., Mr. Thompson lost control over his pickup when he failed to stay on the road. Mr. Thompson did not negotiate the right-hand-bend in the road. Instead, he drove straight and left the road surface. The pickup truck rolled over several times after leaving the road. The truckcame to rest on its tires.
The investigating officers did not say whether either or both of the pickup’s occupants were ejected from the vehicle. The officers did confirm that emergency medical personnel declared the passenger of the pickup truck dead at the scene of the crash. The state police did not name the deceased passenger. The driver and the passenger did not wear seatbelts in the crash. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
According to the latest statistics generated by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), 81 percent of all crashes occur on dry roads and 49 percent of all auto accidents occur on dry roads. In Alexander County, the latest numbers maintained by IDOT, indicate that 159 auto collisions occurred within the county, one of which was a fatal crash. The most recent statistics available from IDOT are from 2015.
