ROCKFORD, Ill. — A 62-year-old man suffered critical injuries when the car he was driving veered off of the road and slammed head-on into a tree on the side of the road. The collision happened around 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 6, 2018, as reported by WREX.com. The responding officer did not identify the driver of the sedan to the media and did not say whether the man had any passengers in his car. The cause of crash remains under investigation by local police.
Officers indicated that the driver of a white sedan styled passenger car went off of the road surface and collided with a tree. The single-car crash took place in the area of the 1700 block of South Mulford Road. The collision caused the driver to suffer critical injuries. Emergency medical personnel raced the driver, whom police would not identify, to a local hospital for life-saving treatment. The hospital listed the driver in critical condition Thursday. There is no update on the man’s condition available.
WREX.com included a photograph of the accident scene in its report. The photo depicts the white sedan with massive front-end damage up against two tree trunks. The trees are only a couple of feet off of the street surface on a grassy sidewalk area. It appears from the picture that the man drove off of the road, crossed a driveway, and slammed into the trees. Absent from the roadway are any skid marks or yaw marks which would indicate that the driver was braking prior to the crash or had lost control and was weaving before striking the tree.
Police closed the 1800 block of South Mulford Road immediately after the crash. Additionally, officers shut down the southbound lanes of South Mulford Road at Newburg Road to investigate the incident. The police kept the roads closed to all but local traffic for about three hours after the crash.
