Small Plane Crashes into Car on I-55

IL- Autoevolution.com reports that a small plane crash landed on I-55, striking a Chevrolet Malibu in the process. The accident happened on Wednesday, July 11, 2018, when the single-engine Cessna 182B lost power.

The pilot, William J. Farnsley, 51, was attempting to land the aircraft at Logan County Airport when the loss of power occurred. The plane also suffered a problem with its landing gear. In the emergency situation, the pilot made the decision to attempt to land the plane on I-55. Farsley was successful in landing on the interstate but struck the Malibu from the back. The car suffered damage, including a broken window and taillight.

Jeremy Campwerth, 42, was driving the Malibu with his son, age 9. Campwerth reports seeing the plane during his drive back from Chicagobut says it was out of his line of sightfor some time before it smashed into the back of his vehicle. Campwerth and his son were both uninjured.

According to Campwerth, people have been telling him that he is “lucky,” because he and his son were not hurtin the crash. However, Campwerth doesnot agree, and pointedout that he was “hit by a plane.” The driver did express his relief that no one was injuredin the accident.

The plane was badly damaged and had to betowed from the shoulder if I-55 where it came to rest after crossing over the median.

The incident is still under investigation.

While private planes have become safer over the years, they are still considered quite risky. By some estimates, flying in a private plane is around 19 times as dangerous as driving in a car. The risks are significant, especially since 40,100 people died in car crashes in the US in 2017.
