Teen Among Two Dead in Horrific Crash in Chicago

CHICAGO, Ill. — A 16-year-old teenage male died, and another person is dead after a vehicle in which they were riding allegedly ran a red light and slammed into a flatbed tow truck that was turning according to the Chicago Sun-Times. The deadly crash happened just before 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 27, 2019, in the Lawndale section of Chicago. A 60-year-old pedestrian also sustained injuries when she was hit by shrapnel from the destroyed car. Chicago Police Department’s Major Accidents Investigation Unit has been called in to investigate. The Unit’s final reports have not been filed, and they continue to look into the case.

ABC 7 Chicago reported that the call reporting a severe crash came into to police at 5:55 a.m. Wednesday. Police raced to the area of the accident reportedly located at South Kedzie Avenue and West Roosevelt Road. Upon arrival, police, fire, and ambulance personnel found a green Chevy Trax with the engine compartment and windshield under the flatbed portion of a tow truck. The vehicles came to rest dozens of feet from where the initial impact occurred. The initial police investigation revealed that the Chevy Trax was driving north on South Kedzie and ignored the light at the intersection of South Kedzie and West Roosevelt. A flatbed tow truck headed east on West Roosevelt, according to witnesses, had the light when the Chevy SUV slammed into it.

The investigation team wants to determine why the driver failed to stop at the light. The impact was so significant that shrapnel from the Chevy flew several feet through the air and struck a pedestrian across the intersection from the collision. The 60-year-old woman sustained injuries. Her medical status is not known at this time, but the injuries were described as minor.

Medics said the two occupants of the Chevy died in the crash and were not transported to a hospital. The tow truck driver was not injured in the crash. Authorities did not release any additional information about the second person who died.
