The Driver of The Vehicle That Collided With Train Died

ROSEMONT, Ill. — The operator of a motor vehicle died Tuesday, March 12, 2019, and two others sustained severe injuries when the vehicle in which they rode collided with a subway train. According to WGNTV.com, the train was running on the Chicago Transit Authority Blue Line tracks. Authorities are trying to determine how the collision happened and why the vehicle came to rest on the tracks. They suspect that the car was traveling at a high rate of speed just before the collision. Authorities continue to investigate the incident.

Reports from WGN-TVsuggest that the vehicle involved in the crash was speeding just before the train hit the car. According to a videoof the scene shown by WGN on its website, the vehicle, which appeared to be a smaller sports utility vehicle, overturned on the Blue Line tracks. The Blue Line train then slammed into the damaged vehicle shortly after the vehicle came to rest on the tracks. The CTA train tracks appear to run parallel to Interstate 190. Reporters say that the car somehow vaulted the barrier between I-190 and the tracks to end up where it did. Authorities suspect that the car was traveling westerly on I-190 at the time of the crash.

Illinois State Police told WGN-TVthat the driver of the vehicle died at the scene of the crash. Two other people in the vehicle also sustained injuries. Reports indicated that numerous firefighters, ambulances, and other emergency personnel responded to the scene. Video taken by WGNTV shows a firefighter carrying a backboard to the mangled vehicle.

The incident caused significant traffic delays on I-190 west. Illinois State Police shut down at least two lanes of traffic. Additionally, the CTA stopped Blue Line trains from Rosemont to O’Hare. Workers restored service later that evening. There was no information provided about the current medical condition of the train passengers as a result of the collision.
