Large passenger vans are frequently usedby programs transporting children, older adults and employees. These vehicles are quite large though, and drivers are not always well trained in how to handle vehicles of this size.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) haswarned that these vehicles present a risk of rollovers, and the risk increases with the number of passengers on board. The NHTSA advises people to take certain precautions when using these vehicles. Of course, the driver should be experienced and trained in how to operate larger vehicles. Check the tires regularly because when the pressure is not correct, the risk of a rollover increases. Avoid using spare tires because they might not be strong enough to support the van. Remember these vehicles are difficult to maneuver and change lanes in because they are quite cumbersome. Drive slowly because large vans cannot stop rapidly. Never pack the van with more than 15 people and do not put cargo on the roof. Ensure that everyone wears their seatbelt at all times. The risk of dying in a crash isthree times higher for people not wearing seatbelts while riding in 15-person vans.
