ELMHURST, IL- Nbcchicago.com writes that a wrong way crash took place on Sunday, December 30, 2018, on Interstate 290 close to Elmhurst. The accident occurred at about 4:31 in the morning.*
According to Illinois State Police, a 24-year-old man from North Carolina was operating a 2013 Jeep heading eastbound in the westbound lanes. The Jeep hit a 2008 Toyota head-on.
A 62-year-old woman from Berwyn was driving the Toyota at the time of the accident. Both drivers and a passenger from the Toyotawere all injured in the collision and were all taken to a nearby hospital.
The identity of the victims and the nature of their injuries are not known at this time.
Only about 2 percent of overall crashes are head-on collisions, but about 10.1 percent of all fatal crashes are caused by head-on impact. These accidents are categorized as lane-departure crashes, which is the same category as run-off-the-road crashes and sideswipes because all of these accidents involve vehicles departing from their lanes.
One way to reduce the chances of adeadly head-on crash is to separate the middle of roads with medians and barriers. While vehicles can get into collisions with medians as well, the severity of these crashes is not as great as when two vehicles strike one another traveling in opposite directions.
Exit and entrance ramps are another place where head-on collisionsor wrong-way crashes occur. It is important that roads have adequate signage alerting drivers before they enter the traveling inthe wrong direction and that these ramps are designed to reduce the chances of a driver making this often-fatal error.
