FAYETTE COUNTY, Ill. — The Illinois State Police were called to respond to a vehicular collision involved a semi-truck on Wednesday, November 14, 2018, in the evening hours. The investigating troopers found the accident scene at I-70 around milepost 118 according to a report furnished by Fox Illinois. The wreck is under investigation by the Illinois State Police.
Responding troopers arrived at the scene of the accident to find a tractor-trailer truck blocking all lanes of traffic eastbound. The shoulder of the road was the only area through which vehicles could pass. State troopers did not say how many vehicles were involved in the incident nor did they indicate whether anyone suffered any injuries.
The accident caused major traffic delays. Accordingly, the Illinois State Police advised travelers to avoid the area of I-70 East at milepost 118 by using exit 105 in Montrose and take Route 40 around to rejoin I-70. As of 9:45 p.m., all lanes of I-70 east were reopened which helped alleviate some of the traffic congestion even though traffic moved very slowly through the area. The Illinois State Police advised motorists to proceed with caution as they approached that section of I-70.
The investigators called to the scene of the wreck did not provide any theories about how the crash might have happened, andthe incident remains under investigation.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) generates data regarding tractor-trailer crashes in the U.S. The most recent statistics available from the FMSCA stated that almost 475,000 crashes involving large trucks happened in 2016. Analysis of those crashes performed by the FMCSA revealsthat less than one percent involved a fatality while 22 percent involved at least one injury.
Trends in the data compiled by the FMCSA suggest that 37 percent of large truck crashes happen between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. Furthermore, 61 percent of fatal crashes happened in rural areas on Interstates.
