Large trucks can weigh up to 20 or even 30 times as much as passenger vehicles. Accidents involving large trucks and cars or other passenger vehicles are far more dangerous to the people traveling in the smaller vehicle. Out of the 3,986 people killed in accidents involving large trucks in the United States in 2016, 66 percent were people traveling in passenger vehicles. Another 16 percent included motorcyclists, cyclists, and pedestrians. Only 17 percent of victims of large truck accidents were people traveling in large trucks. When only fatal accidents involving trucks and passenger vehicles are considered, the victims were people in passenger vehicles in 97 percent of crashes. When truck drivers or passengers in large trucks are killed, it is most often in accidents that involve multiple large trucks, but truck occupants are also sometimes killed in single-vehicle crashes as trucks have a higher risk of rolling over thanany passenger vehicles.
About 50 percent of fatal truck accidents involve a smaller vehicle underriding a truck. In these accidents, cars or SUVs can become wedged beneath a truck or trailer.
