FAYETTE COUNTY, IL. – According to an online report from bnd.com, a trucker was struck and killed June 13 by another semi-truck on Interstate 70 in Fayette County, Illinois.
Illinois State Police report that shortly before 9 p.m. on June 13, 46-year-old Canadian truck driver Peter F. Peters, of Elmira, Ontario, was pulled over on the right shoulder of I-70 East, near mile marker 55 in Fayette County. He was outside of his truck, standing beside the flatbed trailer, when another semi-truck sideswiped him
Peters was crushed between the trailers of the two trucks. Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene. The driver of the second semi-truck fled the scene, reportedly heading east on I-70, and is still at large. Illinois State Police are continuing to investigate the collision and are searching for the missing driver. No additional information has been released at this time.
According to a Crash Report from the Illinois Department of Transportation, a total of 521 vehicle accidents occurred in Fayette County, Illinois, in 2015. Of those accidents, 106 led to injuries of some kind, and two resulted in fatalities.
In addition, 35 of those accidents were “A-Injury Crashes,” meaning they resulted in incapacitating injuries for at least one of the victims. According to the Illinois DOT, an A-Injury is any injury that prevents the person from walking, driving, or normally continuing the activities he/she was capable of performing before the injury occurred. This includes severe lacerations, broken limbs, skull or chest injuries, and abdominal injuries.
