STOCKTON, IL- According to wqad.com, two teenagers sustained injuries in a rollover crash in Stockton on July 6, 2018. The accident happened at about 6:30 p.m. when the teens were driving west on East Airport Road. The driver, a 16-year-old boy, lost control of his vehicle while driving around a curve. The vehicle hit gravel and slid and then went into a ditch where it rolled over.
The driver and an 18-year-old passenger suffered minor injuries and were both taken to Freeport Memorial Hospital. The driver received a citation for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. The authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash.
Car accidents are the number one killer of teenagers in America. In 2015, six teenagers between the ages of 16 and 19 were killed in vehicle collisions every day. Statistically, teenagers are at the highest risk of being involved in motor vehicle accidents. The risk of being involved in an accident is twice as high for teenage boys as it is for girls, and it increases with the number of other teenagers traveling in the same vehicle.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) labels eight “danger zones,” which are the main causes of fatal car accidents among teenagers. The identified risks are inexperienced driving, driving with other teens in the car, driving at night, failing to use a seat belt, distracted driving, drowsy driving, reckless driving, and driving under the influence. The CDC urges parents to teach their teen drivers how to operate a vehicle safely. Parents should come up with a driving agreement that puts rules in place for teenagers learning to drive.
