EFFINGHAM COUNTY, IL- Effinghamdailynews.comwrites that two single-vehicle crashes took place in Effingham that led to two people suffering injuries. The first collision took place on U.S. Route 45 at about 2:45 in the afternoon on Friday, December 14, 2018. The driver, 16-year-old Elizabeth M. Riddle of Louisville was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Impala south when she veered off the road, traveling into a ditch and hit a tree.*

Riddle was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the accident. She was taken to the HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital where she received treatment for injuries she received in the crash. Police issued Riddle a citation for failing to slow down to avoid an accident.

Another single-vehicle collision occurred on Monday, December 17, 2018,on Illinois Highway 37 at about 7:21 in the morning. The victim, 45-year-old Tricia D. Ort of Mason, was driving a 2002 Jeep Liberty northbound when she hit either water or ice that was in an underpass beneath the railroad. The vehicle traveled up an embankment before flipped over and rolling down the embankment. The vehicle landed in the road on its side.

Single-vehicle collisions are some of the deadliest crashes on the road. Most of these accidents are entirely avoidable. In 90 percent of single-vehicle crashes, drivers were traveling above the speed limit. Alcohol, distracted driving and other dangerous behaviors often factor into these crashes as well. While it is difficult to alter driver behaviors, there are steps that could be taken to make the roads safer. Keeping roadsides as free from fixed objects as possible or having barriers in place to protect drivers from leaving the road can help reduce the severity of manysingle-vehiclecollisions.
