Traffic accidents are a common occurrence in Illinois and in the rest of the country. In 2016 and 2017 there were more than 1,000 people killed in traffic accidents in Illinois. There are also many non-fatal traffic accidents that still cause severe injuries and costly property damage. According to a representative for the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), one of the main causes of traffic accidents is distracted driving. In recent years distracted driving has increasingly come in the form of drivers using their cell phones, often for texting. Officers struggle to crack down on the practice though because it is difficult for them to detect.
Another problem in Illinois is speeding. While alcohol-related crashes have decreased, speeding-relatedaccidents have gone up in recent years.
IDOT has been working to reduce traffic-related deaths through its initiative Driving Zero Fatalities to Reality. The program’s stated purpose is to eliminate all traffic deaths. The goal matches that of many major cities that have implemented Vision Zero. Unfortunately, the program has not yet shown improvements, and the number of people killed has continued to increase.
