University of Wisconsin Student Killed in Henry County, Illinois Accident

HENRY COUNTY, IL- Patch.com reports that an athlete from the University of Wisconsin was killedin a car crash on Thursday, July 5, 2018. The college wrestler, Eli Stickley, who was originally from Urbana, Ohia, was driving his Nissan pickup truck on I-74 when he lost control of the vehicle.

Both Stickley and an unnamed passenger who was traveling with him were transportedto Illini Hospital. Stickley was declared dead at the hospital. The condition and identity of the passenger arenot yet known.

A report issued by the Illinois State Police stated that Stickley’s vehicle veered off of the interstate and went into a ditch on the right side of the road. After overcorrecting, the pickup truck rolled over the westbound lanes before stopping in the passing lane on I-74. Stickley’s vehicle came to rest on its passenger side.

Pickup trucks, like SUV’s, are designed to drive higher off of the ground than cars. The higher center of gravity for these vehicles makes them more likely to rollover than cars. However, this does not necessarily mean these vehicles are more dangerous than smaller vehicles. Each vehicle carries its owntypes of risks.

Because of their propensity to rollover, drivers of pickup trucks and SUVs are more likely to be involved in deadly single-vehiclecollisions. Smaller cars are less likely to roll overand are involved in fewer deadly single-vehicle crashes. In the event of a multi-vehicle crash though, occupants of larger vehicles, such as pickup trucks and SUVs are less likely to die in crashes with other vehicles than are people traveling in smaller and lighter cars.
