Vehicle Rolls Over on Interstate 57 in Champaign, Illinois

CHAMPAIGN, IL- Foxillinois.com writes that a traffic accident took place on Wednesday, November 21, 2018 in the southbound lanes of Interstate 57. The vehicle involved rolled over in Champaign near milepost 235.

According to the Illinois State Police, a person from the vehicle was ejected in the crash.
The incident led to long delays on Wednesday.

Rollover crashes often lead to fatalities. Greater than one out of every three people who die in traffic accidents in the United States are killed in accidents where a vehicle overturns. The majority of victims who are killed in rollover crashes failed to wear a seatbelt.

Seat belts offer the best protection to occupants of a vehicle that rolls over. Seatbelts prevent a person from being ejected from their vehicle. Vehicle ejections have an incredibly high rate of fatalities.

Additionally, seat belts prevent a person from smashing into the vehicle’s roof when a vehicle flips.

Some vehicles have higher rollover potential than others. Cars are far less likely to roll over than are SUVs, pickup trucks, and vans. Vehicles have a greater chance of rolling over if they are tall and have a high center of gravity.
While SUVs and other tall vehicles present greater rollover risks, they do offer vehicle occupants other types of protection. Because of their larger size, SUVs provide occupants with better protection in multiple vehicle collisions than do cars. It is possible to reduce the chances of rolling over by abiding by a reasonable speed, checking the vehicle’s tires, and being careful about loading the vehicle. It is important not to overload the roof, which makes the vehicle more top heavy.

SUVs have become safer over time, and the risk of rolling over has declined. This is good news because SUVs and trucks now account for more of the automobile market in the United States than do cars.
