SANGAMON COUNTY, IL- Wandtv.com writes that a woman from Decatur died in a car accident that took place on Saturday, November 24, 2018, on Interstate 72. The collision took place at about 3 in the morning.

A 2005 Chevy Malibu drove off the interstate and spun before striking a tree. Three women were in the vehicle at the time of the crash. The driver, Paris Williams, 27, sustained severe injuries, as did Shakeia S. Stewart, 22, who was a passenger in the vehicle. Marshae Robinson, 29, was killed at the scene of the crash.

The investigation is still ongoing.

Single-vehicle collisions cause a high number of fatalities in the United States every year. In fact, out of all fatal car accidents, a full one in five are the result of one-vehicle crashes. Many of these accidents involve cars running off the road and striking objects that are on the side of the roadway.

The most commonly struck object is a tree, followed by utility poles. Many of these crashes could be avoided ifdrivers avoided certain risky behaviors such as speeding. Speeding is a factor in approximately 90 percent of run-off-the-road car crashes. Driving under the influence is also often a factor. While alcohol plays a role in a large number of total car crashes, the percentage of fatal single-vehicle collisions that involve alcohol is higher than the number of fatal multi-vehicle crashes that involve drivers being intoxicated. Another common factor in these crashes is distracted driving. Distracted driving involves drivers engaging in any activity that takes their attention away from the road. It takes only an instant for a distracted driver to lose control of their vehicle.
