CHICAGO- The chicagosuntimes.com writes that a 74-year-old woman died after being struck by a vehicle in West Lawn on Monday, November 19, 2018. The woman was identified as Charlotte Butsch, from Lebanon, Oregon.
At the time she was hit, Butsch was in a crosswalk on South Cicero Avenue. Butsch was hit by a pickup truck.
The victim was rushed to the Christ Medical Center where she was later pronounced dead. An autopsy was conducted, and it found that Butsch died from the injuries she suffered in the collision. The incident has been ruled an accident.
The 48-year-old person driving the vehicle that hit Botsch was cited in relation to the crash.
The investigation into the cause of the deadlycrash is ongoing.
Last year, pedestrian fatalities and overall traffic deaths in Chicago increased. In 2016, 44 people died, and in 2017 46 people were killed. The five-year average number of pedestrian fatalities was 38.2 according to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT).
Although deaths increased, the rate of the increase is slower than the rateseenacross the United States. Across the country, pedestrian fatalities went up by 11 percent from 2015 to 2016.
The increases were not uniform across Chicago. The more affluent North Side saw fewer pedestrian deaths than other parts of the city did during the same time.
While pedestrian fatalities increased, the percent of those deaths that were caused by drivers who fled the scene has stayed steadily at 40 percent.
The city began a Vision Zero initiative in 2017 that has a stated goal of eliminating traffic fatalities in Chicago by 2026. Many of the deaths took place in areas that are being targeted by the Vision Zero plan.
