Illinois traffic fatalities have increased in 2016 and 2017. In each of the last two years, Illinois’ traffic-related death toll has exceeded 1000 lives. Kelsea Gurski from the Illinois Department of Transportation, (IDOT), says that one of the leading causes of traffic-related deaths is distracted driving. While distracted driving includesanyevent in which a driver is paying attention to something other than driving, in recent years, the most common form of distracted driving involves drivers using smartphones while they are behind the wheel. Texting and driving has emerged as a majorkiller of people on the road. While it is illegal to text while driving, Gurski says that the law is challenging to enforce. Of course, there are many other common causes of car accidents across the state, including speeding and driving while under the influence.

While IDOT has been working to lower the number of traffic fatalities each year through its Driving Zero Fatalities to Reality campaign, the number of deaths has continued to rise, and so do the number of overall car crashes. In 2011, there were 281,788 crashes on Illinois roads. By 2015, the number of crashes rose to 313,216. IDOT’s campaign to eliminate traffic fatalities has a long way to go.
