Worker Dies After Freak Accident

JOLIET, Illinois — A steel beam slipped while in transport and struck a male employee. That employee later died at a local hospital from his injuries according to the Herald-News.com.The fatal accident should prompt a complete and thorough investigation by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, also known as OSHA. The results of the investigationwill not be finalizedfor some time.

There are few details currently available about the workplace accident. The fatal incident occurred on Monday, August 27, 2018, in the morning. Thedeceased, 32-year-old Adrian Mejia-Soto suffered massive head trauma when a steel beam that he was moving slipped from its position and crashed into Mejia-Soto’s head. Ambulance personnel rushed Meija-Soto to Silver Cross Hospital. Meiji-Soto died from the injuries he sustained in the accident at the hospital.

Sheriff’s Deputies answered the emergency call around 9:00 a.m. They raced to the scene and learned that East Joliet Fire Department arrived at the scene before sheriff’s deputies. Fire department personnel began administering emergency aid.Regrettably,the worker succumbed to his injuries.

The fatal incident took place at AZZ Galvanizing on Mills Road. Authorities did not release any information as to why the iron beam slipped, the relative size of the steel beam and whether the decedent was wearing a hard hat while moving the piece of steel.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 171 workers died in Illinois in 2016, the last year of data available. The most frequent fatal accidents are transportation crashes. Trips and falls account for the second most common fatal incident. Workplace violence and animal attacks are the third most common fatal incident in Illinois. Fourth among the most frequent fatal incidents is being hitwith an object.

The two business sectors that experienced the highest number of fatal accidents in 2016 were private transportation and warehousing.
