Wrestlerfrom University of Wisconsin Dies in Car Crash in Illinois

IL- The host.madison.com reports that a 21-year-old wrestler died in a car accident in Illinois on Thursday, July 5, 2018. Eli Stickley was driving a 2004 Nissan Frontier on I-74 when he lost control of the vehicle and drove off of the road and into a ditch. Stickley then attempted to drive back into his lane but overcorrected causing the vehicle to roll. The vehicle ended up in the passing lane on its passenger side.

A passenger was traveling in the vehicle with Stickley, andboth were transportedto the Illini Hospital. The passenger’s condition and identity have not been released. Stickley was declared dead at the hospital.

Stickley was due to enter his redshirt junior season with the wrestling team at the University of Wisconsin. Stickley’s coach described him as a “really good kid.”

Rollover crashes are some of the deadliest on the road. While vehicle crashes involving rollovers are rare, these crashes account for over one-third of car crash-related deaths. Any car can overturn under the right set of circumstances, but cars that are taller and narrower, and more top heavy are more likely to roll over. Rollover crashes occur more often with SUVs, pickup trucks, and vans.

The speed a vehicle is traveling at also plays a major role in whether it flips. About 40% of deadly rollovers involve a driver traveling above the speed limit, and almost three out of four fatal rollovers happened on roadways with speed limits that are over 55 miles per hour. Close to half of these crashes involve alcohol as well.

While one might think rollovers would be more common in difficult driving conditions, most happen in routine driving maneuvers such as traveling straight or rounding a curve in the road. The reason for this is likely that drivers often let their guard down when they are engaged in routine driving and do not perceive any serious risks.
