WILLIAMSON COUNTY, IL. – As reported by bnd.com, a motorcyclist and his passenger were seriously injured June 11 in an accident on Interstate 24 in Williamson County.
The crash occurred shortly after midnight at the Interstate 57 Exit on Interstate 24, about 11 miles from Marion, Illinois, in Williamson County. According to Illinois State Police, 49-year-old John R. Norton, of Terre Haute, Indiana, and 41-year-old Nichole L. Shaughnessy, of Mt. Vernon, Illinois, were traveling on I-24 on a 2006 Harley Davidson motorcycle. On the exit ramp to I-57, Norton lost control of the motorcycle and left the roadway. The motorcycle then overturned.
Both Norton and Shaughnessy were thrown from the bike and sustained serious injuries. Illinois State Police report that Norton was airlifted to a hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, and Shaughnessy was transported via ambulance to a local hospital. Their current conditions are not known at this time. Illinois State Police is investigating the wreck and has not yet released additional information to the public.
Williamson County is located in the southern portion of the state of Illinois and has an estimated population of 67,500. According to a Crash Reportfrom the Illinois Department of Transportation, a total of 1,724 vehicle accidents occurred in Williamson County in 2015. Those accidents led to 10 fatalities, 409 injuries, and 101 incapacitating injuries.
Across the state in 2015, according to the same Illinois DOT report, 1.1 percent of all vehicle accidents in Illinois involved motorcycles. Motorcycle accidents accounted for 15.8 percent of all fatal crashes in the state in 2015 and 3.7 percent of all injury-causing crashes.
