UNION CITY, IL. – An online news story from wandtv.com reports that one person is dead following a fiery crash on Interstate 57 that involved three tractor-trailers.
On the afternoon of June 14, a Volvo tractor-trailer was traveling northbound in Interstate 57 near Union City, Illinois. Near mile marker 33, another tractor-trailer was attempting to make a left turn and drive into the center median. The Volvo tractor-trailer rear-ended the second tractor-trailer, then traveled into the southbound lanes of traffic and struck a third tractor-trailer head-on. Following the collision, at least one the vehicles ignited in flames.
The driver of the Volvo tractor-trailer, identified as Lester C. Barr, died on the scene. The driver of the third tractor-trailer, who has not been identified, was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The driver of the second tractor-trailer, who has also not been identified, does not appear to have been injured in the collision.
Illinois State Troopers say the collision shut down I-57 at Exit 36 for some time. Troopers are still investigating the crash and have not released additional information to the public.
In 2015, according to a Crash Report from the Illinois Department of Transportation, 3.8 percent of the vehicle crashes that occurred in the state of Illinois involved tractor-trailers. These accidents involving big rigs accounted for 8.8 percent of all fatality accidents and 2.9 percent of all injury-causing crashes. Inside of work zones, tractor-trailers were involved in 995 vehicle accidents in Illinois in 2015, leading to 17 fatalities and 125 injuries.
