EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. — Police are searching for the driver of a vehicle that struck a woman and ran away from the scene of the crash. A 49-year-old woman died in the accident. According to the Belleville News-Democrat, the incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 17, 2018, on State Street in East St. Louis. Officers are searching diligently for a suspect. Their investigation remains open and active at this time.*
East St. Louis Chief of Police Jerry Simon identified the woman killed in the hit-and-run fatality as Angela Polk. Ms. Polk resided in East St. Louis.
The police chief indicated that his department received a call for emergency service reporting a woman down in the road on State Street. The call came in to the police department at 10:32 p.m.
Officers and other first responders rushed to the scene to find Ms. Polk in the road. Investigators canvassed the area for eyewitnesses and clues. They found very little if any. As of this time, East St. Louis police investigators cannot determine what time the fleeing car struck the pedestrian.
The St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye, Sr. reported that first responders declared Ms. Polk deceased on the scene of the accident at 11:15 p.m. The coroner said that the woman suffered massive traumatic injuries all over her body.
Officers determined the accident scene to be in the area of 1250 State Street. Consequently, investigators have concentrated on obtaining as much surveillance video as possible from area businesses and homes with the expectation that the video will reveal something about the identity of the fleeing driver.
Police have not said whether any witnesses have come forward to tell police what they know about the crash. Police have not indicated the make or model of the vehicle they suspect was involved either.
