IL- According to theherald.com, a crash involving eight vehicles injured a 67-year-old man from Bolingbrook on Tuesday, July 10, 2018,at about 10:20 a.m.
The crash took place on Interstate 294. The cause of the crash is not clear,but it led to four individuals suffering injuries. One of the injured people was identified asa state trooper. Additionally, a 51-year-old woman sustained injuries. The report indicates that a 37-year-old woman, a 31-year-old Elmhurst man, and a 48-year-old man were all involved in the collision but did not suffer any injuries.
Traffic accidents are frighteningly common across the United States, and in Illinois specifically. In 2017 and 2016, Illinois’s number of traffic-related fatalities was over 1000. Figures from 2017 indicate 1,080 people were killedon Illinois roadways. Of course, many other accidents caused severe injuries and property damage.
One of the major problems according to Kelsea Gurski, who works for the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), is distracted driving. Distracted driving describes any time when a driver is paying attention to something other than the road. However, in recent years, this often means the driver is looking at a smartphone, in many cases, texting. While texting and driving isillegal, Gurski explains that it is difficult for officers to detect the practice and enforce the laws.
Another factor driving Illinois’ high traffic death numbers is an increase in the number of motorcyclists killed in the state.
In 2017, 158 motorcyclists were killed in Illinois, indicating an increase of 40 deaths over 2014. Illinois has no motorcycle helmet law. Only Illinois, Iowa, andNew Hampshire allow any motorcyclist to forgo a helmet.
