Motorcycles off riders far less protection than is offered by passenger vehicles. In addition to the lack of an outside protective barrier, motorcyclists are smaller than other vehicles and can be overlookedby drivers of cars, trucks, andSUVs. Motorcyclists are therefore extremely vulnerable on the roadways. The risk of a motorcyclist dying about 29 times greater than the risk to people traveling in passenger vehicles. In 2016, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safetyreports that 4,976 motorcyclists were killedon US roadways.

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration reminds motoriststo share the road with all vehicle types and to stay alert. Motorcyclists are urged to use helmets approved by the Department of Transportation, to stay sober and make themselves visible to other drivers.

It is also important that motorcyclists have the proper license for their vehicle and have undergone training to learn how to operate their vehicles safely.
