When a vehicle becomes disabled on the road, it is often safer to remain inside of the vehicle than it is to exit on a busy highway or road. In many cases, the best course of action is to call for help from the authorities and remain in the vehicle with a fastened seatbelt in case any other vehicles hit the disabled vehicle.

There are times when this might not be a possibility, for instance when a vehicle catches fire. In these situations, vehicle occupants should exit on the side farthest from traffic and stay away from the vehicle and from traffic.
