WOODRIDGE, IL- Abc7chicago.com writes that a multi-vehicle collision caused traffic to be diverted on Interstate 355. Vehicles traveling south were diverted from the interstate at 75th Street on Tuesday, December 18, 2018. A stretch of I-355 was closed down while the crash was cleared and investigated.*
Reports indicate that the crash led to injuries, but details about the nature of the injuries or the number of victims havenot been reported. It is not clear how many vehicles were involved or what caused the incident.
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), there were 34,439 fatal car crashes in the United States in 2016 leading to a total of 37,461 deaths. In Illinois during that same year, there were 1,003 deadly accidents that caused 1,082 deaths. While more people died in Illinois than in many other states, the death rate for the state is lower than manystates when population size is taken into consideration.
One study found that Illinois is ranked second in road safety when looking into several factors such as DUIs, pedestrian fatalities, and cyclist fatalities. Illinois did not farenearly as well in other types of safety, such as workplace safety, in which the state ranked 25th, and when considering the state’s homicide rate and the number of non-negligent manslaughters, the state came in at 47th.
Still, considering that driving is often considered the most hazardous thing that people do on a daily basis, the state’s road safety is an encouraging factor. Still, the state is wise to take steps to increase road safety by engaging in programs such as Vision Zero. The program began in 2017, and its goal is to eliminate traffic deaths in the city by 2026.
