While intersections only account for a small percentage of national roadways, many accidents occur in locations where roadways meet. In Illinois, 24% of total fatal car accidents occur at intersections. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) reports that thechances that a fatal accident will occur at an intersection are higher in urban environments. Intersections account for 33% of fatal car accidents in urban locations, but only 16% in rural areas.

One of the major contributing factors in fatalaccidents is the speed at which the cars were traveling. More than a quarter of all car accidents inIllinois involved a vehicle traveling above the speed limit. However, even when a car is traveling within the speed limit, higher speeds mean deadlier crashes. Despite the wealth of information indicating that higher vehicle speeds mean more fatalities, Illinois has recently chosen to increase the speed limit on many roadways. For example, parts of I-90 have had the speed limit increased to 70 miles per hour while other stretches have risen from 55 to 60, or 60 to 65. The decision comes as many other locations are choosing to reduce their speed limits in an effort toreduce traffic-related fatalities as part of Vision Zero programs.
