Justice for Children Injured on the Playground in Chicago
Playgrounds are a mecca for young children, allowing children to exercise while learning social skills and having fun. While playgrounds are often thought of us a haven, they are the site of many accidents each year. The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) revealed that there were 2,600 reported accidents associated with playground equipment between the years 2001 and 2008. The majority of these incidents, 67 percent, involved falls. During those same years, emergency rooms treated an estimated 1.7 million injuries associated with playground equipment across the nation. At least 40 children died due to playground injuries, with most of these deaths occurring on pubic playgrounds.
Playgrounds should be safe places for our children to enjoy. Tragically, accidents do occur and children across Chicago are at risk. The parents of children injured on playgrounds may be able to bring a personal injury lawsuit against the owner of the playground, equipment manufacturer, or another responsible party. At Stein & Shulman, LLC, we understand the importance of your child’s safety. We will diligently strive to see that you and your family receive the compensation you deserve following a playground accident. We offer the following tips in hopes that you never experience a playground-related accident:
Keeping Your Child Safe at the Playground
There are some steps you can follow to help keep your child safe while playing at the playground, including:
- Supervise your child well: The parents of young child, particularly those five and under, should closely monitor their children while playing on the playground. Make sure young children do not use equipment from which they could fall and all equipment is used appropriately. Parents of older children should also keep an eye out for any issues and make sure children stay close by.
- Select an age-appropriate playground: Most playgrounds will have signs that state the ideal ages for play. Select a playground that meets your child’s age and abilities. Playgrounds intended for older children could pose a fall risk for young kids.
- Check your child’s clothing: Straps or dangling cords could become trapped within equipment and pose a strangulation hazard. Remove any loose straps or tie them securely before your child plays.
Get Help Following a Playground Accident
If your child has been injured on the playground, consult with a personal injury attorney as soon as possible. Your family may be entitled to receive compensation for the damages you have suffered as a result of the accident. At times, the owner of the playground or an equipment manufacturer will be liable for your child’s injuries. Your attorney will closely assess the accident and determine whether the owner, supervisor or manufacturer should be held accountable for their negligent actions.
