Multiple Accidents after Crash that Caused Power Outage in Peru, Illinois

PERU, IL- Newstrib.com writes that after three inches of snow fell in Peru, Illinois on Saturday, January 12, 2019, a series of car accidents took place throughout the region. The crashes caused traffic to slow to a stand still on Illinois Route 80. One accident, which occurred during the morning led to several more because of the traffic congestion.*

Reports indicate that a minivan driven by 35-year-old Isaac Lesmanleft the westbound lanes, traveled through a fence and struck a utility pole at about 10 in the morning. Lesmanwas the only person in the 2010 Chrysler Town & Country when the accident took place.

Lesman was taken to the Illinois Valley Community Hospital where he was treated and later released. Police charged Lesman with improper lane usage.

While the authorities responded to the scene, the traffic was stopped on the interstate. Two crashes involving semis are believed to have been the result of the halted traffic. One crash involved five semi-trucks which crashed into one another In I-80’s westbound lanes.

The crash involving the minivan broke the utility pole and led to three power lines falling onto the road. Power was out until about 4 in the afternoon on Saturday and cause the internetto be down for many businesses in Peru until about 12 p.m. on Sunday.

Police responded to around 12 to 15 crashes on Saturday in La Salle County. As of Sunday, police were still working to catch up with the crash reports.

Do accident lawsuits go to court or trial?

HANOVER PARK, IL- The dailyherald.com writes that a 35-year-old man from Carol Stream died in a collision on Saturday, January 12, 2019. The victim was in the car with his son who is 12-years-old.*

The crash took place on County Farm Road at about 7:30 in the morning. The victim was identified as Jason Moore. Moore’s vehicle collided head-on with a vehicle driven by an 18-year-old man from Streamwood.

Reports indicate that Moore was traveling south in a Kia Soul while the other vehicle, a Subaru Impreza, was heading north. The vehicles hit one another head one. Moore was transported to the St. Alexius Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Moore’s son and the 18-year-old driving the other vehicle were both hospitalized with injuries.

The DuPage Crash Accident Reconstruction Task Force is participating in the investigation into the collision.

Head-on crashes involve tremendous amounts of force making them extremely dangerous. The human body does not have a strong chance of surviving one of these crashes if the vehicles are traveling about 43 miles per hour. There are many roadways in the country where the opposite traveling lanes of traffic are not separated by any form of median. This means that it is easy for a vehicle to travel out of its lane and into the opposite lane of traffic in an instant without warning. When a car drives into oncoming traffic,a resulting crash can happen so fast that even an attentive driver will not be able to avoid striking the other car. The best way to avoid being killed in a deadly head-on collision is to avoid roads that do not have center medians or barriers unless they have lower speed limits.

SALEM, IL- Bnd.com writes that a multiple vehicle collision shut down a lane of Interstate 57 on Wednesday morning in Salem, Illinois. The police thought that the lane would close for about 4 hours.*

Drivers were advised to proceed with caution. No additional information was reportedabout the incident.

Winter driving presents additional risks for people on the road. Inclement weather is a common factor, and for early morning commuters, icy roads can be a problem. In some instances, if roads are icy, the best course of action is to avoid driving altogether. There is no way to drive safely on slick ice. When driving on icy roads, people should travel at reduced speeds. Regardless of the speed limit, no one should drive over 45 miles per hour on icy roads, although even at much slower speeds it is possible to lose control over a vehicle.

Drivers in places with cold winters sometimes believe that they know how to drive on icy roads or in winter weather and become overconfidentabout their ability to handle dangerous road conditions. In these situations, drivers often realize too late that they were wrong. It is also important to note that drivers should never have too much confidence in their vehicle’s ability to handle slick, icy roads.

In some instances, ice can be on just a part of the road and lead to drivers unexpectedly losing control of their vehicles. For instance, bridges can freeze even while the rest of the road is not covered in ice, and ice can form on shaded parts of the road next to tall buildings as a result of the sun being blocked. It is important always to stayalert and cautious while driving, especially in winter weather conditions.

PRINCETON, IL- Newstrib.com writes that two deadly crashes occurred this week in Bureau County. The first collision took place on Sunday. December 30, 2018, close to Tiskilwa. The second accident took place at about 2:30 in the morning on Interstate 80 and led to the death of a man from Chicago. Four other people were in the vehicle at the time of the crash, which was a rear-end accident.*

The victim of the first crash was Kristen Slutz, 33, who was killed in a one-vehicle rollover crash. Slutz was ejected from her vehicle at about 9:34 in the evening. The accident is still under investigation.

During the holiday season, there are more vehicles on the roadways as people drive to see family and friends and to attend various festivities. The higher number of vehicles on the road means that crashes are more likely.Out of town drivers unfamiliar with local roads create an additionalrisk, and drunk drivers cause many holiday season accidents as people consume alcohol at holiday parties.

It is important that anyone attending a social event where they will be consuming alcohol make arrangements to have a designated driver or use some form of ridesharingprogram rather than putting themselves and everyone on the road at risk by driving while under the influence.

Distracted driving can also be an issue when people are driving, especially if they are on the road in heavy or slow traffic and become bored. Drivers may find themselves tempted to text or call family and friends, or check emails, but all of these behaviors put everyone at risk. Drivers should put their phones down and pay attention to the road and to getting safely to their destination.

PROSPECT HEIGHTS, IL- Thedailyherald.com writes that a cyclist was killed by a vehicle on Monday, December 17, 2018, in Prospect Heights. The victim was identified as an 83-year-old man from Wheeling. Police have not yet released the man’s name.*

The victim was struck by a southbound vehicle whilehe was attempting to cross Elmhurst Road at about 12:34 in the afternoon. A police officer provided the man with CPR at the scene, andthe victim was taken to the Glenbrook Hospital.

The person who struck the victim stayed on the scene. The crash is still under investigation.

According to the dailyherald.com, a cyclist dies around once a week in Chicago’s suburbs. Many of these collisions happen in places without sidewalks or roadside shoulders. Cyclist and pedestrian deaths have both increased in recent years. Part of the problem is that biking and walking are becoming more popular in these areas. Trail networks and infrastructure improvements are encouraging more people to walk and bike, but there is a simultaneous increase in cars on the road.

Distractions caused by devices such as smartphones are a large part of the problem. Drivers are frequently on their phones engaged in activities such as texting, but pedestrians are part of the issue as well. More than 11,000 people sustained injuries between the year 2000 and the year 2011 in accidents caused by people being on their phonesand distracted while walking.

Some officers speculate that drivers in the suburbs are not used to seeing so many cyclists and are not accustomed to sharing the roadways. Despite the risks to cyclists, police still encourage people to get out on bikes saying that the benefits outweigh the risks.

Semi Truck Accident in Chicago Today

DAYTON- Chron.com writes that a second person has died from injuries she sustained in a deadly collision on U.S. 90 on December 10, 2018. The victim, 54-year-old Joann Lucille Basco, of Dayton had pulled to the side of the highway and was rear-ended by another vehicle.*

Basco’s family stated that the victim was taken off of life support on Wednesday, December 19,2018, at a little after 7 p.m.

The victim’s daughter, Ashley Timmons, described Basco as a wonderful grandmother and said that she “couldn’t have asked for anyone better.” Timmons had not heard about the crash until four hours after it occurred. She stated that her mother was driving on a “donut type spare tire” and that she suspected that her mother mighthave experienced problems with the tire causing her to pull over.

Basco’s vehicle was struck and pushed into the left side of the of the eastbound lanes. Timmons said her four-year-old niece was in the vehicle and that none of the people in the parked vehicle were belted when they were struck. Bosco’s third cousin, 52-year-old Cynthia Elizabeth Phillips, was in the front of the vehicle. Phillips died at the scene of the crash.

Basco and the child were brought to the hospital. Bosco did not regain consciousness following the accident. Timmons said that doctors told her that her mother would die because of pressure in her brain. The child sustained a broken femur and is recovering.

The driver who caused the crash, 61-year-old Corliss D. Viator, of Liberty was looking at her phone when she struck Basco’s vehicle.

Charges have not yet been filed against Viator, but police are still carrying out the investigation. The program began in 2017, and its goal is to eliminate traffic deaths in the city by 2026.

The driver who caused the crash was identifiedas Erick Hernandez, 19. Hernandez was under the influence of alcohol when he veered across three traffic lanes and struck an SUV on Monday morning, December 17, 2018. The driver of the SUV, Taylor Phillips, 23, was killed in the head-on collision. Also in the victim’s vehicle were the victim’s mother and her 1-year-old son.

Hernandez is facing charges for “intoxication manslaughter.” Videos from the bar show the defendant consuming alcoholic beverages, 12 in all, prior to getting into his vehicle. The three of the employees who are now facing charges were drinking tequila shots with Hernandez in the video.
